I haven't given up running.  I'm still at it.  I don't talk about it much in the blog because how much whining can you reasonably do and still expect sympathy, right? :)  I have been dealing with some set backs, doing research, fixing one problem and then before I have a minute to enjoy it, the next one comes along.  I think I get it now.  Running is a good way to distract you from the other problems of life ;)

I'm finally getting to the point where I'm running the same distance as the race I'm training for.  A little bit more in fact.  True, I'm so beat by the end of the run that I have to lift my legs into the car, but I'm covering the distance.  It also made me question whether or not I should be driving a manual transmission home, even though its a small distance, with legs so tired.  I guess unless someone hires a chauffer for me that I'll just have to tough it out.

Over the weekend I stopped at a Sporting Goods store to see if I could find shoes that might be better for running.  My ankles, feet and calfs hurt like crazy for the first mile or so until they finally go numb.  I think part of this is that at my age I'm starting to get a bit of arthritis in my bones and the jarring just pisses it off.  The other part is that I land on my heels (as is normal) when I run so it takes the brunt of the punishment.  So while looking at some pretty pricey shoes that really did feel comfy, I saw these things called heel cups that cushion the impact of landing on your heels.  The ones I liked were "gels" and were pretty slim.  I decided to try those before going in for the expensive shoes and paid $8.

I've also been fooling with my diet.  Trying different types of carbs in different amounts with different waiting times after meals.  One of my coworkers had told me she will eat pancakes with syrup before her 8 mile runs and how she seemed to get really good energy from it.  So ...... I had some pancakes yesterday an hour before my run.  Besides the fact that they are yummy I must say that they gave me some really good energy and with my heels protected with the heel cups it was almost an enjoyable run!

So where is the joy in running?  Well, I will begrudgingly admit that the runners high after the run is pretty sweet no matter how much I have to talk myself into going running in the first place.  The other joy that I stumbled upon this morning was that for the first time in years I was able to suck my gut completely in!  No crazy diets or insane amounts of sit ups to get it.  Just some consistent running that I'm starting to not hate quite so much! :)

I'm so tempted to say I think you're just a little bit nuts for doing this, but I won't.  ;)  Apparently there is something to this runner's high -- I'm glad it does that for you.  It's quite an accomplishment to run a 5k.  Is that right?  Can't remember if it's a full marathon..  If it is, I really would say you must be just a little nuts.  :)

MMM - a full marathon!! now that IS nuts!!  No, it's a piddly 5K which is only 3 miles.  Apparently it's a very achievable goal for most people.  But we both know how "special" and spoiled I am ;)  (and probably a little bit nuts too)

You know, you're making this running thing sound better and better.  I might just have to give it a try after I get myself fit enough to actually do it.  Hmmm...well anyway, lol, glad it's beginning to smooth out for you AND that you're keeping at it.

I love that you are doing this.  I had good intentions of walking every day until I could get up to running speed.  Haven't been for a walk around the neighborhood in two months since I started this crappy job back.   I know it must feel good, and I know why.  I just don't have the gumption to do what you are doing, but I repeat.....I love that you are doing this!    You are my idol.

Everytime you can, run on softer ground, grass and like that. That concrete and black top are rough, will hurt your joints more.   Good advice from an old walker............hehehe

It is good to find joy in something.

Hege - I'm not going to lie to you, it's hard to keep at it some times.  But like anything worth doing, it eventually pays off.   wombie - LOL oh no!  If I'm your idol we're all in trouble!  Don't give up on walking, maybe just a slower build up and lots of self forgiveness :)   Altie - always good advice.  The trail I've picked to run on has a gravel path next to the paved part for most of the distance.  To save those joints.   MsB - there is always something to find joy in.  The trick is to recognize it.

I run everyday, even if I can't leave the house. Running can become addictive, I've been hooked for years. I don't run as far as I did at one time but I still get that "high" I've always enjoyed after a good run. If you suffer with pain when you run I would suggest that you double up on you're  source of magnesium and vitamin d, you're body will function much more efficiently and you will get that restful sound sleep you've been seeking.   As far as the sit up thing goes  . . . the hell with them,  you'll end up with back problems, sit ups compress the spine way to much. I do crunches and reverse crunches,  I still show off six pack abs. Snack on a palm full of fresh black berries before dinner, before long you won't have to suck you're gut in. Wow, you're competing in an upcoming race, cool.   Stretching and deep breathing  exercises are very important before and after you run,  they should never go overlooked. I wish you were here. I'd take you to a local "soft" track in town , even though I'm a gentle giant I'd give it my best to run 6 miles before you could run three   ;o)  . . .

Run for the joy it brings you. If it's painful and getting competitive - no point in getting hurt and damaging your body at this age. Like dieting - enjoy what you are eating - just don't eat what you enjoy.  lol

CM - Hmmm magnesium and D.  I'll look into that.  What do the berries do for the abs?   scipio - I think I'm "competing" with the most is myself.  My goals are to finish this upcoming race and then scale back to a more enjoyable running schedule.

cops - undoubtably it would be easier on the joints, but I have health issues that prevent me from swimming in a pool and I don't trust the ocean here.   chatter - me too!
